How beautiful the Ordinary Is
日常がいかに美しいか
たまたま、ヴィムヴェンダース監督の映画を見た。その映画についてのインタビューに、とても興味深い言葉があった。インタビューは主人公の背景について語られている話だった。その映画の中では、彼がどんな人間で、どんな人生を過ごして来たのかは一切語られていないのだが、この映画を理解するにあたっては知っておくべき内容の話だった。インタビューの冒頭では、主人公の成り立ちを話していた。とても複雑な人物像で考えられていて、この映画に特別な深みを与えている。人生の本質をただ経験から悟っているのではなく、ある出来事から啓示を受けた事で目が覚めて、生き方を根本的に変えていったようだった。このある出来事が衝撃的な表現で語られていた。この部分が映画ではまったく触れられていないのだが、それがこの映画にさらに深みをもたせている。インタビューは、映画を見た後に必ず聞くべき話だった。
監督は説明していた。彼に特別な時間と特別な出来事が重なった奇跡が、彼のためだけにその時に起こったのだと説明した。「彼だけのために」。これが重要な言葉だと思った。その啓示によって人生の本質に目が覚める。必要最低限の生活で、他には何も必要ない。心を満たしてくれるのは、光、本、音楽、植物。それで十分だった。
By chance, I saw a film by the director Wim Wenders. In an interview about that film there were words that interested me greatly. The interview was about the background of the main character. In the film, nothing at all is told of what kind of person he is or what sort of life he has lived, and yet it was something you had to know in order to understand the film. At the beginning of the interview, the director spoke of how the character had come to be. He is conceived as a very complicated figure, and this gives the film a particular depth. It seemed that he had not merely come to understand the essence of life through experience, but had been woken by a revelation received from a certain event, and had changed the way he lived from the root. This certain event was told in shocking terms. That part is not touched on at all in the film, and it is this that gives the film its further depth. The interview was something you had to hear after seeing the film. The director explained. That a miracle, in which a special time and a special event folded over one another, had happened for him, at that moment, and for him alone. For him alone. These, I thought, were the important words. Through that revelation, one wakes to the essence of life. A life pared to the minimum, with no need of anything else. What fills the heart is light, books, music, plants. That was enough.
